Bokashi-experiment for food waste bio composting, funded by Horizon2020/Cities2030, 6-10.2022. The objective of the experiment is to explore change drivers of bio-composting of food waste from the table to the fields to enhance inhabitants’ positive carbon handprint, self-sufficiency, and resilience.  Lahti Living Lab experiment. 

SMARTY: IoT – equipped food waste composter, funded by Horiozon2020/Cities2030, 6-11.2022. The purpose of the experiment is to improve the carbon handprint of city dwellers and promote food self-sufficiency, food waste recycling, and urban food system resilience. The experiment tests how localization and remote monitoring of bio composters could influence waste authorities and -operators’ work, and real estate maintenance services.

The Voice of Healthcare Logistics, Prime Minister’s Office & Motiva Oy (10/2018 – 3/2019).   The digital transformation in healthcare is a necessity to save costs, improve service quality, customers satisfaction, and treatments’ impact.  One identified barrier in the digital transformation is the healthcare workers’ low digital literacy.  This project aims to give peer learning experience to healthcare logistics workers.  The everyday stories of healthcare logistics workers are brought to the spotlight. Employee stories about digital logistics solutions in the healthcare industry are stored in a podcast format and shared on the web. Storytelling gives everyday work structure, form and conveys a feeling.

Digital Manufacturing, European Regional Development Fund ERDF, 10/2017 – 12/2019; Digi Manufacturing project enhances 3D printing business opportunities in the Päijät-Häme region in Finland.  The great majority of Päijät-Häme area is rural, hence the vitality and attractiveness of rural areas represents the whole region’s status. The project pilots a new 3D printing technology, strengthens technical skills and boosts new business ideas based on digital technologies to enable and support distributed manufacturing models, that offers a new source of livelihood also to the rural areas.  

Grasp the content of social media by text mining – case City of Lahti, Prime Minister’s Office & Motiva Oy, 6/2018 – 10/2018; The aim of the experiment is to find out how sentiment text analysis extracts certain type of feedback and comment data at social media, which talks about public environmental services at the City of Lahti.  The framework of the experiment is the SERVQUAL- and GAP5-models: the quality of the public service processes.

SERVQUAL & GAP5, Prime Minister’s Office & Motiva Oy, 6/2018 – 12/2018; The project developed a concept and mobile application to analyse service quality and service quality gaps.  The concept is based on SERVQUAL and GAP5 models. The novelty of the solution is that the query is conducted to three stakeholders: managers and operators at the service provider organisation and the service beneficiaries aka customers.  The visual result of the queries is a radar.  The query is designed to be generic and hence scalable and the result will help organisations to identify the pain point in their service production.

Machine vision for bird identification – strengthening the nature relationship of young people, Prime Minister’s Office & Motiva Oy, 6/2018 – 12/2018; The wider scope of the project is to expand the knowledge of the Citizen Science among young people at the field of bird identification. The purpose is to identify birds by using artificial intelligence (AI) solution which is based on Machine Vision and Machine Learning. The project explores how the usage of the application impacted on young peoples’ nature relationship and their interest on the environmental issues.  The project partner was BirdLife Finland which is an active Citizen Science operator.

Circular Economy – Recycling bale wrapping plastics, Prime Minister’s Office & Motiva Oy, 1/2019 – 5/2019; Polyethylene, a raw material for bale wrapping plastics, does not turn to recycled raw material of plastics production. The purpose of the experiment is to promote dialogue between different actors of the value chain and to find solutions. Lahti Living Lab provides a social space for dialogues.  The goal is that the proportion of recycled raw material used in bale wrapping in livestock farms increases from the estimated 20% to 80% by the year 2025.

The Voice of Good Working Life (European Social Fund ESF), 2015-2017. The project carried out 85 different well-being,  productivity and innovation development sub-projects for SMEs. Lean Thinking and Lean Six Sigma tools were the intervention core of productivity & innovation enhancement. Central to the projects was the development from the work community’s own point of view, together with employees and experts.

Eye4Diabetes, Prime Minister’s Office & Motiva Oy, 5/2019 – 11/2019; The aim of the project is to explore and ideate how personal BioHacking data by using health technology solutions like rings and watches could be more efficiently used at occupational health care context.  The personal and sensitive health data (MyData) and it’s secure management at digital solutions was one of the main topics.  The project objective is to form several MyData based business models at facilitated stakeholder workshops.

Let Learning Lead (European Social Fund ESF), 2014-2015 The purpose of projects is to advance productivity, performance, well-being and customer-oriented development at the SMEs.  Project builds capacity and implement continuous improvement and Lean values and principles by practice-oriented experiments and development.  The target group is regional SMEs. Note that Tuula Löytty was at work on the project of which coordinator was Lahti University of Applied Sciences.

Local Street food, European Regional Development Fund ERDF, 1/2016 – 3/2017; The project was focused on events offered food, food events, as well as its implementation, in perspective a local presence and local food. The aim was to create new business models in the food sector by creating new action models for enterprises for co-operation as dining suppliers of local events.

Organizing and mentoring INSPIRE Hackathons.  Smart & Lean Hub Oy has been involved in several  INSPIRE Hackathons initiated by Plan4all association: Nairobi 2019, Kampala 2020,  COVID 2019, Open Spring 2021 (https://www.plan4all.eu/inspire-hackathon/).  Hackathons have been virtual and they have lasted circa 3 months.  Challenge-based learning, doing by learning and co-creation have been key features in each hackathon.  Löytty has been a mentor for teams whose participants were mainly from the African continent. Hackathon reaches out the wide audience by webinars and effective social media communication.

INVITE/OI2Lab (https://invite-project.eu/) to explore the novel 3D modelling technology to evolve personalized prosthesis (1/2019-12/2020). 

IWAMA, Interreg (2016-2019). IWAMA aim is to improve wastewater management in the Baltic Sea Region by developing the capacity of the wastewater treatment operators and implementing pilot investments to increase the energy efficiency and advance the sludge handling. Tuula Löytty contributed to the project by collecting data sets, harmonizing data sets, conducting multi-vary statistical data analysis, and leading interactive reflection sessions with experts.
