Blue Wing Composting project researches possibilities of green industry by combining insect economy and recycling.
Blue Wings Composting
Blue Wings Composting project kick-off takes place in autumn 2020. Project aims to recycle low-grade food bio-waste by utilizing larvae. Larvae will be placed in container with food stock and we aim to research how effectively larvae consumes food. By consuming food, larvae will produce soil and before larvae will hatch, project aims to search for what purpose fed larvae could be utilized in industry or as food source, for example for fish.
Project will gather participants and stakeholders nationally and internationally e.g. Länsiharju school, City of Lahti and national & international insect economy R&D institutions. In addition, project reaches out local big audience. One of the main goals of the project is to road map and explore possibilities of insect economy on smaller scale, but to increase the scale with larger projects in the future. Smart & Lean and our partners see many possibilities with this form of industry.
Blue wing compost is part of environmental project – Lahti – European Green Capital 2021 which aims to create innovation and improvement in environmental issues, such as recycling, energy production and awareness. Even though blue wing compost is very localized and relatively small project, we aim to continue project on a larger scale and introduce possibilities of insect economy to our stakeholders and partners.
