Blue Wing Composting project researches possibilities of green industry by combining insect economy and recycling.

Blue Wings Composting
Blue Wings Composting project kick-off takes place in autumn 2020. The project aims to recycle low-grade food bio-waste by utilizing 10000 Black Soldier Fly larvae. Larvae will be fed by mixed food waste that is leftover from the school kitchen. Our aim is to research how effectively larvae consume food. Larvae bio-converse waste food, produce protein and facilitate nutrient recycle. The experiment aims also to study how fed larvae are or could be, utilized in industry for food or feed. One of the goals of the project is to explore insect economy both smaller scale e.g. larvae farm at school and look into industrial scale possibilities.
Project gathers stakeholders e.g. Länsiharju school, City of Lahti, Lappeenranta–Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Päijät-Häme STEM-center. In addition, the project reaches out local big audience.

Blue Wings Composting is part of environmental project – Lahti – European Green Capital 2021 which aims to create innovation and improvement in environmental issues, such as recycling, energy production and awareness. Even though Blue Wings Composting is a very localized and relatively small project, we aim to continue the project on a larger scale and introduce possibilities of insect economy to our stakeholders and partners.

The Blue Wings Composting experiment is conducted together with Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT ) SIRKKA project. SIRKKA – kestävästä proteiinituotannosta uutta liiketoimintaa
